Session 1: New council, new dynamics
Target group: New to role Directors/GM – first time experiencing council elections and other interested Director/GM

Time: 2pm - 3pm

This informal question and answer session will cover what to expect when working with a new Council and provide insights from an expert panel of local government professionals. After the October poll you’re likely to be working a fresh mix of people, some with limited political or government experience.

You’ll hear about how to support the organisation post-election, what new councillors will need and how to communicate effectively with them, how to build the respect trust and confidence and ideas for effective rapport and relationships building in a Covid workplace. You’ll end the session with a clearer idea of governance processes, hear about what works and how to support a new council.

This facilitated discussion – with our expert panel - will give you a clear understanding of the challenges and expectations coming your way.

Our panelists:
  • Liana Thompson, LGPro President and CEO Northern Grampians Shire Council
  • Bernadene Voss – current Mayor, City of Port Phillip
  • Daniel Freer, Director Environment and Infrastructure, City of Boroondara
  • Tony DeFazio, Governance expert and recently retired Manager Governance, City of Whitehorse

Session 2:
Who should attend – all Directors/GM

Time: 3pm - 5pm

The Forum will include:
Facilitated leadership discussion with Margaret Devlin
Open Forum - What can you share and contribute? (LGA Reforms, general discussion, challenges, shared learning opportunity)
Meet your peers - Opportunity to meet your peers in small group, informal environment

Facilitated discussion: Leading and navigating uncertainty in a post-election environment.

If 2020 has shown us anything, it’s that nothing is certain. What happens if the CEO does not keep their job post-election? Directing a team while navigating uncertainty in a post-election environment presents challenges you should be prepared for.

This discussion will investigate what to expect and watch out for, including the importance of leading in times of change, the psychology of uncertainty – what effect it has on individuals and organisations - using your political nous and the importance of influencing outcomes.
