Health & Wellbeing for Employees
Health and wellbeing is largely determined by the social, economic, physical and cultural environment. Health policy has historically tended to concentrate on the treatment of ill health rather than on its prevention. The Health and Wellbeing Sig Group addresses these issues by entering into discussions across councils and working together in developing and delivering health promotion initiatives. These proactive initiatives address health and wellbeing issues that include healthy eating, physical activity, smoking, alcohol & substance abuse, cancers, musculoskeletal disorder, stress, mental health, and health & safety issues. Currently we are an active diverse group promoting various ways to reduce injuries and absenteeism internally whilst developing programs that will promote the health and wellbeing of their employees.
Human Resources
'The Human Resources Special Interest Group is a generalist HR group and has been involved with the broad range of HR issues but with a focus on Workforce Planning. In particular this has involved addressing current and future shortages by developing Attraction and Retention strategies and making local government more of an Employer of Choice. It has also involved extensive work on issues resulting from the Ageing Workforce. The group meets on a bi monthly basis. It has also been involved with seeking assistance from government/peak bodies for research into HR issues and the development of workshops on topical HR issues.'

Internal Communications
The LGPro Internal Communications Special Interest Group focuses on all staff being involved in communicating with each other to create a shared sense of purpose and community.
Learning & Development
The L&D SIG meets every two months at different Council locations. Emerging from a group of professionals with a responsibility for training and professional improvement who have met informally for 7 years, the SIG is now proactive in addressing issues related to workplace learning and improvement, performance management, leadership and cultural development, health & well-being and career and personal development. Because learning and development is addressed differently throughout Councils local government professionals are encouraged to attend to share experiences and challenges, learn from and network with colleagues and hear from experts in the growing field of learning and development.
Office Professionals
The LGPro PA SIG has recently changed the name to Office Professionals to include many of the Admin Staff who perform similar tasks to the PA's. This will strengthen the networking group and be beneficial in many ways. Key areas of interest are issues such as the roles of different Government officers, i.e. Economic & Community Development and Health to mention just a few, but also women in high positions such as CEO's, Managing Directors of Corporate Businesses as well as State and Local Government. Networking is also an important part of our meetings, relating to people from different Councils who perform similar tasks and are in similar roles.
Procurement
The objective of the group is to network, discuss emerging procurement and contract management trends and provide a forum for information exchange and professional development.
Property Network
The Property Network Group began as an informal meeting between a handful of officers from a small number of Councils interested in sharing information for the purpose of satisfying Best Value benchmarking requirements. Since this first meting in August 2001 attended by 7 people, the group has grown to a mail list of over 60 members, representing over 30 municipalities from both urban and regional areas.

More recently, in March 2006, a second network group formed. The second group’s agenda was to address issues arising relating to major projects and the strategic aspects of managing a property portfolio. This group is still in its developmental stages.

The new Property Network Group will represent the interests of both the above groups.

The group meets quarterly at various municipalities. The meetings generally involve a guest speaker or presentation in an area of interest, and an informal discussion session. The following Mission, Objectives and Interest Areas provide some insight into the what the group does.
Public Relations
The Local Government Public Relations Network formed in the 1980s is the group to which most active Local Government PR professionals in Victoria belong. The group's committee of management organises a program of bi-monthly meetings and other events of interest. At each meeting there is a round table discussion on current issues. In between meetings, frequent use of email has solved many a problem for members and shared ideas, documents and approaches that have proved invaluable.
Risk
The objective of this special interest group is to support and connect Local Government risk professionals in recognising and dealing with the unique challenges presented by the management of risk in Local Government. In doing this through the LGPro platform, it will foster professionalism and guide the attainment of key group objectives to ensure that learning and discussion will lead to the development of best practice risk management.
SIG Convenors
This Forum is for LGPro SIG convenors only.
Statutory Services
The statutory services special interest group targets the areas of parking control, animal management, local laws and school crossings. The group have established an information sharing protocol in addition to influencing legislators on legislation reform. We are striving to establish consistency in the sector as well as being a reference point.
Volunteering
The Volunteering Special Interest Group will be of interest to local government professionals, who are working within, or have responsibility for, the planning and delivery of Volunteering activities. The Group’s meetings and activities will have a strategic focus, including volunteer management and mentoring. The Group’s objectives are to: 1. Influence volunteering policy and practice through: • An ongoing dialogue with the State Government, particularly the Department of Planning & Community Development (DPCD). This dialogue will take place both directly and through LG Pro. • An ongoing dialogue with Volunteering Victoria and volunteering Australia • Provision of an opportunity for specific volunteering issues to be addressed, and for successful projects/programs to be showcased. 2. Provide an opportunity for cross-disciplinary meetings and/or workshops, which may be held in partnership with other SIG’s, on matters relating to volunteering. 3. Through the above activities, provide a professional development opportunity and needs identification.
