Campaigns

LGPro has led a number of advocacy campaigns on issues that affect people working in the sector. Some of these campaigns are ongoing and we will continue to lobby for a successful outcome for Local Government.

Women in senior roles

On International Women’s Day in March 2016, LGPro’s female Board members presented a report to the Local Government Minister titled: 'Addressing Representation of Women at CEO level in Local Government'.

The report expressed concern at the low representation of women in senior roles in the sector and called on the government to address the issue.

As a direct result of the report, in June 2016 the Minister announced that she was forming a Ministerial Women’s Roundtable involving all female Victorian Local Government CEOs and others in leadership positions. Members of the roundtable advise the Minister on strategies and actions to increase the number of women at CEO and senior management levels in the sector. They also provide input and advice on the implementation of the Local Government Ministerial Statement and general reforms in the sector.

The roundtable meets twice a year and LGPro is represented at the meetings.

LGPro continues to actively advocate to increase the number of women in senior roles in the sector.

Protecting Council officers

Local Government officers working in the areas of domestic animal control, parking, food regulation enforcement, public health and wellbeing, planning and environment enforcement and regulation, tobacco control, building regulation and local laws are frequently subjected to abuse and sometimes assault while carrying out legitimate duties.

Authorised officers deserve to be safe at work. To achieve this we are advocating for authorised Council officers to be afforded the same protection as emergency workers when carrying out their duties.
