Local Government in 2020. What should it look like? What are the key challenges?

Set at the beginning of the year, the topic above proved a challenge for the Emerging Leaders, but one that they were up to.

Just what are the challenges that Local Government faces in the next decade and a half? Are these challenges significantly different from those of the last 15 years?

The group toiled for the first part of the year deciding exactly what the question meant and how they were going to tackle it. After considerable debate, the group sought to tackle the problem from four angles - Leadership, Financial Sustainability, Image, and Physical Services.

It became clear in assessing each area, that our strategies for local government in 2020 fall within four key focus areas, known as the '4 Rs':

• re-invent
• re-assess
• re-use
• re-connect

These form a focal point in each of the project areas, and are a key theme throughout the project.
